Conceptual System Dynamics and Agent-Based Modelling Simulation of Interorganisational Fairness in Food Value Chains: Research Agenda and Case Studies

The context is that a food value chain involves flows of multiple products, financial flows and decision making among the food value chain players. Each decision may be viewed from the level of independent actors, each with their own motivations and agenda, but responding to externalities and to the behaviours of other actors. The focus is to show how simulation modelling can be applied to problems such as fairness and power asymmetries in European food value chains by evaluating the outcome of interventions in terms of relevant operational indicators of interorganisational fairness (e.g., profit distribution, market power, bargaining power). The main concepts of system dynamics and agent-based modelling are introduced and the applicability of a hybrid of these methods to food value chains is justified. This approach is outlined as a research agenda, and it is demonstrated how cognitive maps can help in the initial conceptual model building when implemented for specific food value chains studied in the EU Horizon 2020 VALUMICS project. The French wheat to bread chain has many characteristics of food value chains in general and is applied as an example to formulate a model that can be extended to capture the functioning of European FVCs. This work is to be further progressed in a subsequent stream of research for the other food value chain case studies with different governance modes and market organisation, in particular, farmed salmon to fillet, dairy cows to milk and raw tomato to processed tomato.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

À partir de huit études de cas d'Amérique du Sud et d'Europe, les auteurs examinent la manière dont les parcours des enfants façonnent et sont façonnés par les diverses institutions qui en ont la charge (services de prévention de la jeunesse, services de protection, hôpitaux, parlements, parenté…). Les auteurs analysent la manière dont les valeurs et dispositifs promus par ces institutions sont appropriés, contestés ou encore redéfinis par les enfants et les autres acteurs individuels et collectifs impliqués. Conjuguant plusieurs approches en sciences sociales, le volume montre le caractère dynamique de la production institutionnelle de l’enfance et explicite ses dimensions sociales, politiques et culturelles. Résolument engagé dans le dialogue avec la société civile, l’ouvrage s’adresse tant aux spécialistes de l’enfance (académiques et professionnels) qu’aux étudiant-e-s (en sciences humaines, sociales, politiques ou de l’éducation) et aux décideurs des politiques publiques

Designing Just Transition Pathways: A Methodological Framework to Estimate the Impact of Future Scenarios on Employment in the French Dairy Sector

This paper proposes an innovative framework to describe sustainable transitions of food systems while considering simultaneously socio-economic and environmental issues, in a just transition perspective. This framework (i) describes the structural changes needed for a sustainable transition in food systems; (ii) assess their effects on employment at the farm and processing industry level; (iii) detect the political levers needed to make this transition a just one—that is, preserving jobs and livelihoods for communities. Using the decarbonation pathway for the agricultural sector issued from the French National Low-Carbon Strategy as reference, we developed two scenarios for the French dairy sector which have the same level of climate ambitious, but a different approach to reach the target. Aiming exclusively to achieve a greenhouse gases reduction, the first scenario relies only on supply side measures. This scenario has a negative impact in terms of employment loss at the farm level and in the agri-food sector. In contrast, a multifunctional scenario considering simultaneously climate, biodiversity, health, and employment issues, and playing with policy measures targeting supply, demand and market organisation can maintain jobs in the farm and agri-food sector, contributes to restore the agro-biodiversity and develops food products compatible with healthy nutritional guidelines

L’Homme et son environnement : des lacs, des montagnes et des rivières

Ce recueil d'articles est destiné à saluer notre collègue André Marguet, qui a consacré une trentaine d'années de sa vie d'archéologue à l'étude et à la préservation des gisements immergés dans les lacs savoyards. Il regroupe deux douzaines de contributions originales qui abordent des questions variées liées à l'homme et à son environnement, entre lacs, montagnes et rivières. La diversité des sujets abordés témoigne des rencontres et des amitiés nouées par André et reflète assez bien ses thèmes de prédilection. Les textes rassemblés dans ce volume couvrent un vaste espace géographique au cœur de l'Europe occidentale, et s'éloignent ainsi largement des lacs alpins et jurassiens. Ils abordent un intervalle de temps étendu, de la Préhistoire récente jusqu'aux époques historiques, et donnent un bel aperçu de la diversité actuelle des objets, des questionnements et des méthodes de l'archéologie.Diese Sammlung ist ein Gruß an unseren Kollegen André Marguet, der an die 30 Jahre seiner archäologischen Tätigkeit der Erforschung und der Erhaltung der in den savoyischen Seen lagernden Fundstätten gewidmet hat. Die Sammlung umfasst zwei Dutzend Beiträge zu unterschiedlichen Themen, die den Menschen und seine Umwelt inmitten von Seen, Bergen und Flüssen betreffen. Die Vielfalt der Themen zeugt von Begegnungen und den Freundschaften, die André geknüpft hat, und gibt eine recht genaue Vorstellung von seinen Lieblingsthemen. Die Texte dieses Bandes decken ein weites Gebiet im Herzen Westeuropas und gehen auf diese Weise weit über die Seen der Alpen und des Jura hinaus. Sie betreffen einen langen Zeitraum, von der jüngeren Urgeschichte bis in die jüngeren geschichtlichen Epochen, und vermitteln ein Bild von der aktuellen Vielfalt der Artefakte, Fragestellungen und Methoden der Archäologie.This collection of articles is dedicated to our colleague André Marguet, who has spent some thirty years of his archaeological career dedicated to the study and preservation of the underwater sites in the lakes of Savoie. It brings together two dozen original papers that tackle various themes on man and his environment, including lakes, mountains and rivers. The variety of subjects attests the exchanges and friendships entered into by André and reflect his preferred subjects. The texts cover a vast geographic area of Western Europe, also straying far from the lakes of the Alps and Jura. They extend over a protracted period, from recent prehistory to the twentieth century, and offer a snapshot of the current state of affairs
